Konstantin Zatulin, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the State Duma of the Russian Federation for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, said that the amendments to the law "On Citizenship" received by the State Duma Committee imply the deprivation of acquired Russian citizenship for a number of offenses. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

According to him, one can lose Russian citizenship for treason or discrediting a special military operation of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine.

Earlier, Andrey Klishas, head of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council, said that amendments to the Criminal Code for discrediting members of the SVO would be considered on Wednesday, March 15.

According to Klishas, consideration of the draft law on the protection of military personnel will apply to all Russian soldiers in the NVO zone, regardless of status.

Responsibility for "public dissemination of deliberately false information about the use of the Armed Forces" of Russia and their discrediting increases from three to five years. In addition, the penalty for repeated discrediting “causing dangerous consequences” will now increase from five to seven years in prison.

On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a military special operation to protect Donbass in response to a request for help from the heads of the LPR and DPR.

The decision to conduct the operation was the reason for new sanctions against Russia by the United States and its allies.
