The National Intelligence Service (MİT) of Turkey has learned that the oppositionists intended to carry out a coup d'état on May 13, the day before the presidential elections in the country. This is reported by the newspaper Yeni Şafak, citing sources.

According to the publication, on the afternoon of May 13, Major of the Marine Corps S.T. visited the regional office of MİT in Çanakkale and said that an attempted coup was being prepared in the republic, similar to the one that was committed in 2016.

MİT took the information very seriously. The relevant notifications were received by the Ministry of National Defense and the General Staff, and the administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was also informed.

All military barracks and bases were searched in turn. Entrance to the barracks was restricted, writes Yeni Şafak.

Subsequently, it turned out that S.T. lied, presumably due to unstable mental health. Despite this, precautionary measures at military bases and units continued until May 28 - until the second round of voting in the presidential election.

This is not the first time in Turkey that they tried to change the government by force. So, on the night of July 15-16, 2016, a group of rebels attempted a coup d'état in the republic. This event went down in history as the Turkish military putsch, as it was organized by the military. They took control of a number of strategically important facilities in Ankara, Istanbul, Konya, Marmaris, Malatya and Kars.

In the end, the rebellion was crushed. As of December 2016, more than 37,000 people have been arrested in connection with a coup attempt in Turkey. Turkish authorities blamed the organization of the opposition Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen (FETO) for the incident. Gülen himself, who is in the US, condemned the coup and denied the allegations.

On June 3, 2023, Ankara hosted the inauguration of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will hold this post until 2028. The politician announced a new composition of the Cabinet, in which only two ministers remained from the previous convocation. Read more in the article "Gazety.Ru".
