Indonesia's peace plan for Ukraine is unlikely to be accepted by Moscow and Kiev, says Nikolai Topornin, Associate Professor of the Department of European Law at MGIMO, Director of the Center for European Information. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he appreciated Jakarta's initiative to end the conflict.

Why did Indonesia propose a peace plan?

Indonesia, like many other countries before, presented its version of resolving the crisis, as there is a demand for it, the political scientist believes.

Recently, countries from the most remote regions have taken the initiative in trying to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“Most recently, African countries, led by South Africa, also announced that they have their own peace plan, which they are ready to submit for consideration by Moscow and Kyiv, and such contacts have already taken place. Brazil also once voiced peace proposals, China and some other countries, earlier European countries offered. Probably, this should be considered in the context that this is one of the most important problems that many countries of the world would like to resolve now, ”he explained.

Will Indonesia's proposal suit Moscow and Kyiv?

Russia and Ukraine see the end of hostilities in their own way, Nikolai Topornin noted. In his opinion, the Indonesian proposal will not suit either side.

“Any plan that does not provide for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory they occupy, Ukraine rejects. Many times the Russian leadership has said that it seeks to liberate the Lugansk and Donetsk regions, as well as the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, which were included in the Russian Constitution as part of the Russian Federation. While these territories are partially under the control of Ukraine, I also see no reason for Russia to be satisfied with such proposals, especially with the withdrawal of troops, ”he concluded.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said that Kyiv appreciated Indonesia's proposal and categorically rejected it.

On June 2, the head of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, Prabowo Subianto, proposed creating a demilitarized zone in the region of a special military operation on the territory of Ukraine and introducing UN peacekeepers there. The initiative also involves the withdrawal of troops from both sides from their current positions for 15 kilometers. In addition, Jakarta considers it necessary to hold a referendum for residents of the "disputed territories". What exactly is not specified.
