The vice-mayor of Riga Edwards Ratnieks proposed to create a square in the Latvian capital or name a street in memory of the Latvian SS legionnaires. This is reported by the portal Delfi.

He stated that he would send a corresponding proposal to the commission on toponyms and names of urban objects. According to the official, the Latvian SS legionnaires are a symbol of the struggle against the "totalitarian Stalinist regime and occupation."

“Therefore, it is wrong to pretend that there were no legionnaires. The history of Latvia should be known and not be ashamed of it either in Latvia, or in Europe, or in other parts of the world,” Ratnieks stressed.

In March 2022, the Minister of the Interior of Latvia, Maria Golubeva, called for the annual march in memory of the Latvian SS Legion not to be held in Riga. The head of the department considered holding the event inappropriate, because, according to her, it would give the Russian media another reason to reproach the country for justifying Nazism.
