President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said that the country should be more careful in creating monuments associated with the Soviet Union, according to the website of the head of state. During a meeting with Kazakh heads of regional administrations and government agencies, he noted that sometimes monuments are opened to those who are associated with mass repressions.

“Biographies are being invented filled with heroic deeds that did not exist in real life. Archival documents on this topic either do not confirm, or are completely absent. Activist groups are literally forcing our citizens to believe in the mythologized biographies of party and state leaders of the Soviet past…> Local onomastics commissions should not allow this,” Tokayev added.

As the President of Kazakhstan pointed out, this issue requires close attention from the state authorities. He also explained that the regional commission should stop such cases.

“If everyone erects monuments exclusively to their ancestors, tribalism and localism will reign in the country,” Tokayev emphasized.

Earlier it was reported that in Kazakhstan it was proposed to change the Soviet names of the regions to historical ones.
