Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis proposed that the European Union (EU) impose partial sanctions against the Russian state corporation Rosatom. He spoke about this in an interview with Politico newspaper.

In his opinion, the EU could impose sanctions against the Russian nuclear industry, while allowing the states that have contracts with Rosatom to fulfill the current agreements.

The Foreign Minister noted that countries that have nuclear power plants fear that the cancellation of existing contracts could create problems in the field of nuclear safety. At the same time, Landsbergis pointed out that the European Union faced similar difficulties when discussing an embargo on oil from Russia.

“We made an exception for a number of countries because of their dependence on Russian oil, or because they did not have alternative sources, or because their refineries used only oil coming from Russia. This decision was difficult for us, because we wanted a complete embargo. But in the end, everything worked out,” the minister added.

Earlier, Politico, citing sources in diplomatic circles, reported that the European Commission abandoned plans to impose sanctions on the Russian nuclear sector or its representatives in its tenth package of sanctions.
