Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa said in an interview with the Financial Times that the republic is asking the European Union to help it fight human and arms trafficking, which has intensified against the backdrop of the Ukrainian conflict.

According to the politician, illegal goods and weapons come from the territory of Ukraine.

In 2022, the European Union created a specialized “support center” in Moldova to counter the above problems. Before starting negotiations with representatives of the European Commission, Gavrilitsa stressed that the republic needs additional assistance from the EU "in order not to allow human trafficking networks to grow." It is expected that during a series of meetings, representatives of the bloc and the republic will discuss the issue of the EU's contribution to strengthening the borders of Moldova.

According to the FT, the EU has significantly increased financial and humanitarian support to Moldova, which was granted the status of a candidate for membership in the community in June last year, after the launch of a Russian special operation in neighboring Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana will meet with Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa at the alliance's headquarters in Brussels on February 7.
