German Left Party co-chairman Martin Schirdewan told Der Spiegel magazine that a lasting peace must find a way to engage with Russia.

He noted that he would like to see a person in the German government who is serious about establishing contacts with Russia.

At the same time, Shirdevan pointed out that the European Union should become independent from both Russia and the United States. However, even after the conflict, the Russian Federation will remain part of Europe, so the EU should think about relations with Moscow, the politician said.

In addition, according to him, Berlin should define security outside of NATO.

Earlier, German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz declared the inadmissibility of a war between Russia and NATO.
