Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has pardoned tens of thousands of protesters in the country. According to the IRNA agency, the amnesty will be held in honor of the 44th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution and the month of Rajab.

"The leader agreed to the proposal of the head of the judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, to pardon or commute the sentence of tens of thousands of defendants detained in the course of recent events in the country," the report said.

It is noted that those accused of spying for foreigners, as well as those who committed murders or participated in the destruction and arson of public buildings, will not fall under the amnesty.

Mass riots have been going on in Iran since mid-September last year after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained by the vice police because of the wrong wearing of a headscarf. Residents blamed police for the girl's death.

An Iranian court has sentenced five protesters to death over the death of a vice police officer. Another 11 people received long terms of imprisonment. The first execution took place on 8 December.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) at the United Nations (UN) called on the Iranian authorities to stop executing protesters and stop the practice.
