On April 12, 1961, the world's first human flight into space took place. At 9:07 Moscow time, the Vostok launch vehicle was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. She launched the Soviet spaceship Vostok into low-Earth orbit with Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin on board.

Cosmonautics Day was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on April 9, 1962. The idea of this holiday was put forward by German Titov, the second Soviet cosmonaut.

In 1968, it was decided to assign international status to Cosmonautics Day and henceforth to call it “World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day.”
