Janusz Walus, previously sentenced to life in prison for the murder of the country's Communist Party Secretary General Chris Hani, has been released in South Africa. According to ENCA TV channel with reference to the country's Ministry of Justice and Correctional Institutions, Valus was released on parole.

The release decision was made by the Constitutional Court of the country on November 21, 2022. It provoked protests from the African National Congress and the Communist Party of South Africa. A week after this decision, Walus was wounded in prison, due to which his release had to be delayed.

Under the terms of his release, the man will serve two more years in public correctional institutions and will be prohibited from returning to Poland.

The assassination of Communist Party Secretary General Chris Hani, who fought against the apartheid regime, took place on April 10, 1993. Polish émigré Walus, who was a supporter of far-right movements, fired several shots at the politician near his house. According to him, he wanted to provoke a civil war in South Africa and prevent the dismantling of the apartheid regime. The killer was sentenced to death, which in 1994 was commuted to life imprisonment.

Earlier it was reported that South Africa began collecting signatures for a nationwide petition demanding that President Cyril Ramaposa not resign because of allegations of a possible violation of the constitution.
