Ukrainians working in Latvia will be obliged to learn the Latvian language from January 1, 2024. Such decision was accepted by the Saeima Commission on defense, internal affairs and prevention of corruption, transfers Delfi.

Citizens of Ukraine who have entered into legal labor relations will have to attend courses in Latvian from the beginning of 2024.

It is noted that the decision raised questions from representatives of the society Gribu palīdzēt bēgļiem (“I want to help refugees”). They pointed out that such a duty in the country is not assigned to any group of society.

Deputy from the New Unity party Ugis Rotbergs urged not to turn the “state language into a dummy” and noted that Ukrainians, when the hostilities in their country end, will no longer legally be refugees.

Earlier, the Estonian language department complained that because of the Ukrainian refugees, they began to speak more Russian in the country. The head of the department, Ilmar Tomusk, stressed that they would be given a year to learn Estonian.
