Ukrainian refugees will be required to attend classes in the Latvian language from January 1, 2024. This decision was made by the Commission of the Latvian Seimas on Defense, Internal Affairs and Prevention of Corruption. Delphi reports.

The obligation applies only to Ukrainians who have found work in the territory of Latvia.

“These amendments do not impose anything, but on the contrary, they “go towards” the refugees, so that it would be easier for them to work,” said parliamentarian Edmunds Zivtins.

The parliament noted that the decision gives a signal to those Ukrainians who want to stay in Latvia - in a year they will need to attend courses.

The commission also supported in the second final reading the amendments to the Law on Support for Civilians of Ukraine as a whole. Thus, the Latvian authorities will continue to provide housing to Ukrainians who need it, but no longer than until June 30, 2023.

Earlier, Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kallas said that her country would not be able to fully accept a new wave of Ukrainian refugees. Kallas stressed that Estonia has been "generous" so far.
