The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, called the demolition of the monument at the largest memorial in Lithuania in honor of the Soviet soldiers who fell in the Great Patriotic War illegal. She said this on the air of Sputnik radio.

According to the diplomat, the Lithuanian authorities are not only not interested in the opinion of the UN, but "conscience does not bother them." Zakharova stressed that the issue of Soviet monuments is not about politics, but about people "losing their human appearance."

“It's just a matter of absolute lawlessness, which, unfortunately, is gaining momentum in our world. This is a global problem, it is not only a problem of one country,” the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed her opinion.

The demolition of six steles at the largest memorial in Lithuania in honor of Soviet soldiers who fell in the Great Patriotic War began on December 6. The work is scheduled to be completed in a few weeks. After dismantling, the steles will be stored on the territory of the municipal company Grinda. What will happen to them next is still unknown.

The decision to demolish the monument was made by the Vilnius authorities in June. The dismantling was delayed due to the intervention of the UN Human Rights Committee, which asked to refrain from dismantling the monuments to Soviet soldiers.
