In relations between France and Germany, tension is growing in all important issues from geopolitics to the defense sphere. About it writes the publication Politico.

“There is no real way to hide the current gulf between Berlin and Paris, present in everything from geopolitics to defense, energy policy and public finance,” writes columnist Paul Taylor.

According to the publication, the bilateral summit between Germany and France in November was canceled due to disagreements between the countries. Politico sources also report that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal for a joint visit to China to present a common European position to Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

"France and Germany are dissatisfied with each other's betrayals and selfishness," the publication claims.

On the defense front, for example, Paris is outraged that Germany, which set up a €100bn special fund this year to modernize its weapons, has spent most of the money on American aircraft, while freezing a number of joint Franco-German arms cooperation projects. .

Berlin, in turn, is outraged that France not only refused to extend the existing pipeline across the Pyrenees to pump gas from Spain to Germany, but also made a separate deal with Madrid and Lisbon for a new underwater pipeline to bring gas from Barcelona to Marseille.

Earlier it was reported that the Ukrainian conflict marked the deep strategic differences between France and Germany, quarreling them like never before.
