US refuses nuclear submarines to Australia

As part of the AUKUS defense alliance, the United States could offer Australia the joint use of American nuclear submarines (NPS). This idea was put forward by a member of the United States House of Representatives, Rob Wittman. It is reported by Breaking Defense.

“There was a lot of talk that the Australians would just buy an American submarine. This will not happen, ”said the parliamentarian, adding the refusal to provide submarines to Canberra with the fact that Washington cannot afford to interrupt the previously planned purchases of nuclear submarines.

According to Wittman's proposal, the American side could allow the Australian side to observe the full production cycle of nuclear submarines and the training of its crew, as well as establish joint patrols in the Asia-Pacific region, after which Canberra should decide on plans for its further actions.

In that case, Wittman says, “Maybe the US should have 51 percent control and command, and Australia 49 percent.” According to him, "traditional views of sovereignty and sovereign capabilities do not matter at the moment."
