The Russian Embassy in Vilnius said that Lithuania "neglected" the UN recommendation to demolish the monuments, TASS reports citing the diplomatic department.

According to them, the UN recommended to refrain from demolishing the monument at the memorial dedicated to the memory of Soviet soldiers of the Great Patriotic War at the Antakalnis cemetery in Vilnius, but in the end it was demolished.

“We call on international and public organizations to assess this,” the text says.

Earlier, Lithuanian Minister of Culture Simonas Kairis said that the dismantling of monuments to Soviet soldiers of the Great Patriotic War in the country does not violate the Geneva Conventions related to participants in hostilities.

According to Kairis, the documents indicate that military graves and burials deserve a respectful attitude. “We provide it,” he assured.

The Russian Embassy condemned the desecration of the memorial to Soviet soldiers in Lithuania.
