The Latvian prosecutor's office brought to court the case on the fact of embezzlement from the warehouses of the National Armed Forces of Latvia, which lasted almost 10 years. This is reported by Grani.lv with reference to the LTV channel.

During the investigation, it was found that ammunition for firearms, bayonets, magazines and cartridges totaling almost € 340,000 were missing from army warehouses. According to the Latvian prosecutor's office, the weapons were sold to other countries.

Thefts were discovered after the Americans, who donated night vision devices to the Latvian army in 2018, decided to clarify whether the Latvian military liked them. After that, it turned out that the gift never reached the addressee - devices worth about $ 160,000 during the year were not taken into account in the warehouse of the National Armed Forces and were not transferred to the military.

Four servicemen were charged in this case, they were accused of misappropriation of ammunition and abuse of office.

The publication clarifies that during the investigation it also turned out that the Supply and Service Center “has not been taken under liability for goods worth more than €21 million.” Eight people were punished as a result of an internal audit.

Earlier it was reported that the United States will deploy two HIMARS mobile artillery missile systems to Latvia.
