The Qatari television channel Al Jazeera has filed a lawsuit against Israel with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the case of the death of its journalist Shirin Abu Akle, according to a statement on the website of the channel's owner, Al Jazeera Media Network.

"Today, Al Jazeera Media Network is referring the case of the killing of colleague Shirin Abu Akla by Israeli occupying forces to the International Criminal Court in The Hague," the document reads.

The statement notes that Al Jazeera's legal team conducted a detailed investigation and identified new evidence based on a number of eyewitness accounts, the study of numerous video materials and forensic evidence.

The appeal of the Qatari holding to the ICC prosecutor says that new eyewitness accounts and video footage confirm that Shirin and her colleagues were fired directly by Israeli "occupation forces."

Earlier, the United States asked Israel to change the rules of hostilities after the death of a journalist.
