The representative of the Ukrainian side, Anton Korynevych, said at the International Court of Justice that Kyiv would prove Moscow's violations of two international conventions - on combating the financing of terrorism and the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. The arguments will be submitted as part of a lawsuit against the Russian Federation filed in 2017, TASS reports.

“During the hearings, Ukraine intends to show what obligations Russia has under the Convention on the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and how Russia evades its implementation,” he said.

According to the Ukrainian side, the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR) are involved in terrorist activities funded and armed by Russia. In particular, it led to the crash of flight MH17, and is also used to shell civilian cities.

Kyiv also intends to present arguments according to which Moscow violates the convention on the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. In Ukraine, they claim that Russia systematically infringes on the rights of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars in Crimea.

Korynevych argues that Russia cannot escape its obligations under the convention by citing counter-extremism or national security laws.

In May, it was reported that the International Court of Justice in The Hague would hold hearings on a 2017 Ukrainian lawsuit against Russia from June 6 to 14, in which Kiev accused Moscow of financing terrorism in the Donbass and discrimination in Crimea.

In January 2017, Ukraine filed a lawsuit against Russia with the International Court of Justice, demanding that Russian actions in Donbas be recognized as violating the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism, and in Crimea as violating the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

The Russian authorities pointed out that “the Ukrainian army and nationalist battalions have been shelling the peaceful cities of Donbass since 2014.”

On May 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed the creation of an international tribunal against Russia. He said that during his visit to The Hague he met with the chairman of the International Criminal Court, Piotr Hofmansky, and the secretary of the court, Oswaldo Aguilera.
