European Union Special Representative for the Western Balkans Miroslav Lajcak and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Gabriel Escobar expressed concern to the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo Albin Kurti about the situation in the north of the province and called for an immediate de-escalation. Lajcak wrote about this on his Twitter page following the talks of the parties in Pristina.

Lajcak and Escobar called on Pristina to hold elections in the northern municipalities of Kosovo with the participation of Kosovo Serbs, and also proposed to return to the dialogue on the normalization of the situation in the region.

On June 6, EU and US representatives are expected to continue their visit to the region, holding talks in Belgrade with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

The Serbian population and parties boycotted the partial local elections in northern Kosovo on 23 April, which led to the victory of the Albanian candidates. Their arrival at city halls sparked protests and violence on May 29, in which about 100 people were injured. After the clashes, NATO increased its presence in Kosovo, adding 700 people to the KFOR mission.

Earlier, the Foreign Minister of the partially recognized Republic of Kosovo, Donika Gervala-Schwartz, said that the Kosovo authorities are open to the possibility of holding new local elections in municipalities with a Serbian majority.
