Ukraine called for new sanctions against Russia after the collapse of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on the G7 countries and the European Union to impose new sanctions on Russia after the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. This is stated in a statement on the official website of the Foreign Ministry.

“We also call on the G7 countries and the EU to urgently consider imposing new far-sighted sanctions on the Russian Federation, including the Russian missile and nuclear industry,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also proposed to convene an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the explosion of the hydroelectric power station, which the department considered "a terrorist act against Ukraine's critical infrastructure." They also called the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station "the largest man-made disaster in Europe in recent decades."

On the night of June 6, in the Kherson region, the upper part of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was destroyed near Novaya Kakhovka. Dozens of settlements, including Kherson and New Kakhovka, began to be flooded with water. Water flooded 600 houses in three settlements of the Novokahovsky district.

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov accused Ukraine of committing sabotage at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region. In Kyiv, they say that Russia is to blame for the explosion.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation began checking the circumstances of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station under the article of the Criminal Code of Russia on a terrorist attack.
