Cost overruns on Aerojet Rocketdyne RS-25 engines and Northrop Grumman solid rocket boosters for the Space Launch System (SLS) super-heavy rocket totaled $6 billion. This became known to ArsTechnica.

The publication refers to a report by NASA Inspector General Paul Martin, according to which the modernization and production of power units led not only to exceed the cost of the SLS program, but also to lag behind the original schedule by more than six years.

“This means that the cost overrun of the SLS rocket power plant alone costs the space agency about the same as it would spend on the development of two reusable lunar landers - SpaceX Starship and Blue Origin Blue Moon,” the publication says.

According to Martin, cost overruns on SLS engines could threaten the Artemis program to return the US to the moon.

In November, the super-heavy SLS rocket was launched for the first time from Launch Complex 39B at the John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida (USA), which delivered the Orion spacecraft into lunar orbit.
