AI is an unplowed field for scammers.

An Arizona mother spoke of receiving a phone call from a stranger who claimed to have kidnapped her 15-year-old daughter.

It turned out that her daughter's voice was generated using AI.

The era of Deep Fake fraud has arrived.

“I pick up the phone and hear my daughter’s voice: “Mom!” and she sobs."

“Then I hear a male voice: “I have your daughter. Call the police, I'll drug her and drop her off in Mexico." And at that moment I just started to shake. In the background, she screams, “Help me, Mom. Please help me. Help me," and cries."

The voice sounded exactly like her daughter's: "I didn't doubt for a second that it was her."

“You can no longer trust your ears,” said Arizona State University computer science professor Subbarao Kambhampati.

“A lot of voice cloning is actually capturing intonation as well as emotion. The larger the sample, the better it can capture them.”
