Foreign Policy columnist, Council on Foreign Relations Research Fellow for Europe Liana Fix believes that the lack of a specific goal for the West on the Ukrainian crisis has created a serious advantage for the Russian Federation.

Fix noted that Washington and Brussels cannot create a real goal for which they intervene in the Ukrainian crisis. The observer points out that the ambiguity of the position of the Western countries worked only in the first stages of the conflict.

According to her, it was convenient for the West to avoid signals about the limitations of support and demoralization” of the forces of Ukraine “with some unattainable goals or deadlines.”

“Hence the frequent talk of Western countries about helping Kiev with whatever it takes, and as much as it needs, sounds convincing until you ask what it all means,” Fix wrote.

The author emphasizes that Western politicians, speaking about the goal, note that it is “the task of Ukraine itself”, but, the observer points out, the possibilities of this goal-setting are completely dependent on the supply of weapons, which gives the United States and its allies all the cards.

“If Ukraine’s allies fail to define victory, Russia will. Without a clear goal, more and more Westerners will perceive the conflict as a protracted, uncertain struggle. This will ultimately undermine the morale of Ukraine and the West itself,” she warned.

Earlier, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and former ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said that Kyiv did not have enough tanks to prepare a counteroffensive and gain an advantage on the battlefield.
