China is learning from Russia's defeats and victories in Ukraine, the New York Times writes.

The newspaper studied about 100 Chinese research papers and media articles that assess the war in Ukraine. Here are the main conclusions of Chinese military analysts:

- Russia has successfully used hypersonic weapons to destroy an ammunition bunker, fuel depot and other targets.

- Starlink has provided APU with communications, so China must quickly develop a similar low-orbit satellite system - and find ways to disable competing ones.

- Putin successfully keeps the Western powers from directly intervening in the war by brandishing nuclear weapons. This could help expand China's own nuclear program.

China's nuclear arsenal could grow to around 1,000 warheads by 2030, according to the Pentagon.

- China should pay attention to the shortcomings of the military logistics of the Russian Federation and prepare for similar challenges, but adjusted for island operations (here there is a reference to a possible war over Taiwan).

- Russia's difficulty in mobilizing enough infantry shows that China needs to keep its ground forces strong and numerous.

As one study puts it, Russia's experience has shown that "a great power must maintain reasonable ground forces or it will lose its advantage on the battlefield."

Learning from Russia's experience could reinforce China's belief that it can win a possible conflict.

China's $225 billion military budget is nearly three times that of Russia's, and China's vast manufacturing and technological capabilities mean it can produce a host of advanced drones and other weapons that Russian forces lack.
