The unity of Belarus and Russia is an attempt to form their own macro-region against the backdrop of intensifying geopolitical competition in the world, says Andrey Savinykh, chairman of the permanent commission on international affairs of the lower house of the Belarusian parliament. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

April 2 is the Day of Unity of the Peoples of Belarus and the Russian Federation. It was on this day 27 years ago that an agreement was signed on the formation of a community of Russia and Belarus.

“This is how the situation in the world is developing, that the Day of Unity is currently acquiring special significance,” the Belarusian deputy stressed.

According to Savinykh, now the world is splitting into macro-regions, when all states unite into alliances in order to ensure their own security.

“In this regard, the unity of Belarus and Russia is, in fact, an attempt to form their own macro-region, attractive for other countries to join,” the politician concluded.

Earlier, the authorities of Belarus called Russia's nuclear weapons a deterrent to external threats. The situation was described by the chairman of the commission on international affairs and national security of the National Assembly (upper house of parliament) of Belarus Sergei Rachkov.
