Samsung intends to create and release a record-breaking SSD drive in the foreseeable future. This is reported by SamMobile.

Corporation representatives spoke about their plans during a discussion of the future of solid state drives with other SSD manufacturers. According to the engineers of the Korean firm, future SSDs will have a capacity of 1 petabyte or 1024 terabytes. One such drive will save about 22,000 hours of 4K video, several dozen SSDs will store the full archive of the US Library of Congress.

At the same time, the company noted that the launch of such drives on the market should not be expected in the coming years. Samsung estimates that innovations in this area will make it possible to create record capacity SSDs within the next decade.

Specialists of the Korean corporation noted that in order to design such SSDs, it will be necessary to deal not only with physical, but also with logical scaling. According to engineers, such a NAND drive will have more than 1000 layers. It will also be necessary to solve the problem of equipment heating during operation.

In December 2022, Backblaze predicted that hard drives would become cheaper. According to analysts, by 2025 the average cost of one gigabyte when buying a 22 and 24 terabyte HDD will be $0.01, or about 80 kopecks.
