The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgar Rinkevich, joked about Ukraine's joining the European Union. This is reported by Sputnik Near Abroad in its Telegram channel.

“Today I am happy to announce that we are accepting Ukraine into the European family. A historically important event for Ukraine and the EU,” the diplomat wrote.

According to media reports, Rinkevich had to apologize for the April Fool's joke and delete his post, as users from Ukraine reacted negatively to the post.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that after Ukraine became a member of NATO, it could launch a full-scale operation against the Russian Federation because of Crimea. According to him, the Russian Federation cannot accept this.

In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that some world leaders predict the republic's entry into the European Union only in 10 years, but Kyiv could get there in a few years, writes Strana. According to him, the country expects to join NATO after the end of the conflict.
