Turkish opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has been accused of flouting tradition for wearing shoes on an Islamic prayer rug (prayer). In the Turkish edition of Yeni Şafak, the photo of the politician was called "scandalous".

The material mentions that a similar photo with Islamic theologian Fethullah Gülen, who is accused in Ankara of attempting to organize a coup d'état and terrorism, was published by The Wall Street Journal.

The photograph of Kılıçdaroglu on the rug was taken as part of the election campaign. The Republican People's Party, which he heads, explained that the politician did not notice the rug because of the tense situation and apologized.

Earlier it was reported that the Turkish electoral committee allowed four candidates to run for the presidential elections, including the incumbent head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kılıçdaroğlu.
