The official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that, following historical logic, the Romanian language should be called Moldovan, and not vice versa. She wrote about this in her Telegram channel.

Commenting on the statement of the Romanian Foreign Ministry that the law of the Moldovan parliament on renaming the state language of the republic into Romanian "restored the scientific truth", Zakharova noted that a consensus has long been established in historical linguistics regarding the Moldovan and Romanian languages. According to the diplomat, they are really similar, but at the same time they are different dialects.

According to the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moldavian is the ancient language of Moldovans, which is mentioned in the works of the 17th century, while Romanian took shape only at the very end of the 18th century, after the theologian Samuil Miku-Klein created a set of rules and grammar.

“If they want to rewrite the name of the language, then let them adhere to historical logic and call Romanian Moldavian, and not vice versa,” Zakharova summed up.

Earlier it was reported that the Moldovan parliament approved the renaming of the state language from Moldovan to Romanian.

Later, the former president of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, spoke out against changing the name of the state language of the country from Moldovan to Romanian.
